1. What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store. On a later visit, the browser sends it back, which lets the site recognise the browser. Related technologies — local storage, session storage, pixels and software development kits — do similar jobs by different means. Throughout this policy, "cookies" covers all of them.
Cookies are described as first-party when set by the site you are visiting, and third-party when set by another organisation whose content or technology the page loads. They are session cookies if deleted when you close the browser, and persistent if they remain for a defined period.
2. How consent works here
On your first visit, a banner appears before any non-essential cookie is set. You can:
- Accept all — allow analytics and advertising cookies in addition to strictly necessary ones.
- Reject non-essential — allow only strictly necessary cookies.
- Manage choices — enable or disable analytics and advertising separately, then save.
Your decision is recorded in your browser's local storage under the key
scofiabarrk_consent_v1. It stays on your device; it is not sent to us as an
identifier and it does not travel between browsers or devices. Clearing your browser's
site data removes it, and the banner will appear again.

4. Strictly necessary
These are required for the website to function and cannot be switched off through our banner, because without them the site cannot be delivered or your privacy choice cannot be remembered. They do not track you across other websites.

5. Analytics
Analytics cookies help us understand which guides are read, how visitors arrive, and where they stop reading. We use this to decide what to write and what to improve. The information is used in aggregate; we are not trying to identify individual readers, and we do not combine analytics data with anything else.
Analytics cookies are set only after you consent. If you reject them, none are set, and the only record of your visit is the ordinary server activity described in our privacy policy.
Where a third-party analytics provider is used, it will typically set its own cookies with durations ranging from the length of a session up to around two years, and it will process the data under its own privacy terms.
6. Advertising
This site is free to read because advertising pays for it. With your consent, advertising technology providers may set cookies to:
- select advertisements, including based on interests inferred from browsing;
- limit how many times you see the same advertisement;
- measure whether an advertisement was delivered, viewed or interacted with;
- detect invalid traffic and advertising fraud.
These cookies are set by the advertising providers themselves, not by us, and they are controlled by those providers under their own privacy policies. Where Google advertising products are used, Google describes its practices at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites, and you can manage personalisation at My Ad Center.
If you reject advertising cookies, you will still see advertising, but it will not be personalised using cookie-based profiling on this site.
7. Third-party technologies
We keep third-party technology on this site to a minimum. The pages are static HTML, CSS and JavaScript served from our own domain; there are no embedded social media widgets, no comment systems, no external font services, no chat tools and no tracking pixels beyond those associated with the advertising and analytics described above. Where a guide links to an external site — for example a regulator or a government resource — that link only loads the third party when you click it.
8. Managing cookies in your browser
Independently of our banner, every major browser lets you block, restrict or delete cookies. Look for cookie or site-data controls in the privacy section of your browser settings:
- Google Chrome — Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies / Site data
- Mozilla Firefox — Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
- Apple Safari — Settings → Privacy (macOS), or Settings → Safari (iOS)
- Microsoft Edge — Settings → Cookies and site permissions
- Brave, Opera, Vivaldi — Settings → Privacy, with similar controls
Most browsers also offer a private or incognito mode, which discards cookies at the end of the session, and many now block third-party cookies by default.
9. Industry opt-out tools
Several industry bodies operate tools to opt out of interest-based advertising from participating companies at once:
- Digital Advertising Alliance — YourAdChoices
- Network Advertising Initiative opt-out
- Your Online Choices (Europe)
These tools generally work by setting their own opt-out cookie, so clearing your cookies may also clear the opt-out.
10. What happens if you refuse
Nothing on this site is gated behind consent. Every guide, the glossary, the FAQ and all policy pages work identically whether you accept everything or reject everything non-essential. Refusing means we lose some insight into which content is useful, and advertising becomes less relevant — neither of which affects your access to anything.
